where P represents the pressure gradient between the pulmonary artery and the pulmonary vein, F, the blood flow per unit time, and R. the vascular resistance. For a given pressure gradient and flow rate, R will be determined, among other things, by the physical dimensions of the chaniiels that the blood traverses. In a rigid hydraulic system this formula applies over a wide range of flow and pressure, and R remains constant. In the living subject, however, numerous mechanisms act on the vessels to change their caliber, hence R becomes a variable. The effect of passive distention on the vascular resistance has been studied recently by several investigators on various animal preparations. Thus, Phillips, Brind, and Levy' found that for a constant pressure gradient between the femoral artery and vein, the flow in the denervated hind leg of the anesthetized dog increased with increasing intraluminal pressures. They concluded that the resistance

Quantitative evaluation of hemodynamic parameters during acute alveolar hypoxia and hypercapnia in the isolated ventilated-perfused rabbit lung

Introduction: Acute respiratory disorders such as obstructive pulmonary diseases and hypoventilation may lead to alveolar hypoxia and hypercapnia which their effects on pulmonary vascular beds are controversial. The aim of this study was to establish the isolated perfused lung setup and investigate the effects of alveolar hypoxia and hypercapnia on pulmonary vascular resistance. Methods: White ...

Patent ductus arteriosus in a lamb: A case report

Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) is a persistent patency of a vessel normally present in the fetus that connects the pulmonary arterial system to the aorta. The ductus arteriosus fails to close at birth when breathing commences and placental blood circulation is removed. Closure of the ductus arteriosus arises in response to decline pulmonary vascular resistance and increased systemic vascular re...

High and low pulmonary vascular resistance in heart transplant candidates. A 5-year follow-up after heart transplantation shows continuous reduction in resistance and no difference in complication rate.

BACKGROUND In heart transplantation candidates, high pulmonary vascular resistance has been found to decrease promptly after heart transplantation without any further reduction during follow-up. Pulmonary hypertension has been described as associated with an increased peri- and postoperative complication rate and mortality. This study describes the evolution of pulmonary vascular resistance and...

Longitudinal distribution of vascular resistance in the pulmonary arteries, capillaries, and veins.

A new method has been described for measuring the pressure and resistance to blood flow in the pulmonary arteries, capillaries, and veins. Studies were performed in dog isolated lung lobes perfused at constant flow with blood from a donor dog. Pulmonary artery and vein volume and total lobar blood volume were measured by the ether plethysmograph and dyedilution techniques. The longitudinal dist...

Responsiveness of raised pulmonary vascular resistance to oxygen assessed by pulsed Doppler echocardiography.

OBJECTIVE To assess whether changes in Doppler echocardiographic indices in the pulmonary artery correlated with changes in pulmonary vascular resistance. DESIGN Acceleration time, ejection time, maximal flow velocity, and velocity time integrals were measured at the same time as pressure and oxygen saturation measurements in room air and during 10 minutes of oxygen breathing in the catheteri...

Endothelium-derived nitric oxide regulates systemic and pulmonary vascular resistance during acute hypoxia in humans.

OBJECTIVES This investigation sought to determine whether endothelium-derived nitric oxide contributes to hypoxia-induced systemic vasodilation and pulmonary vasoconstriction in humans. BACKGROUND Endothelium-derived nitric oxide contributes to basal systemic and pulmonary vascular resistance. During hypoxia, systemic vasodilation and pulmonary vasoconstriction occur. There are some data indi...
